Albert John Ross (b. 1877 or 1880 – d. 1950) was a Nova Scotia-born emigrant to Washington State. A documented male-line descendant of Albert has taken a Y-DNA test, the results of which are a key representative sample for the documented descent of Hugh Rose, 9th of Kilravock, within the Ross Surname Project. Albert's own marriage record and death certificate name his parents incorrectly; a full account of how his documented parentage was established is given under Research notes below.

DNA evidence
Y-DNA
A male-line descendant of Albert has taken a Y-DNA test, using the most thorough test currently available (Big Y). This is the only Big Y-tested descendant of Hugh 9th Kilravock currently in the Ross Surname Project, and this descendant's pedigree was published in Charles Brashear's Descendants of Francis Ross (2011) as an example of a documented Rose-to-Ross line descending from the Kilravock family in Scotland.

This result is a genetic match to several other tested descendants of a documented line from Hugh, 9th of Kilravock's, brother, John Rose, 1st of Ballivat, down through the American immigrant Rev. Robert Rose (d. 1751). This kind of match is exactly how Y-DNA testing confirms a documented pedigree: two lines, each independently traced on paper down to a shared ancestor (Hugh 8th Kilravock), converge genetically right where the paper trail says they should. Beyond Hugh 8th, it is assumed – based on the published, though not primary-source-verified, Kilravock pedigree – that he inherited this same Y-chromosome from his own ancestor, Hugh 1st Kilravock (d. c. 1306), but this remains an assumption rather than something Y-DNA testing has independently confirmed, since no other documented Kilravock branch old enough to test against Hugh 1st himself has yet been identified.

This test is also a close match to descendants of James Ross of Frederick County, Virginia (an Ulster immigrant, d. 1751) and his great-grandson Arthur B. Ross of Claiborne Parish, Louisiana (b. 1789). Both men are now confirmed, through this match, to descend from Hugh 9th Kilravock as well – though exactly where their line branches off from Albert's own remains unknown, and further testing would be needed to narrow it down. Nothing in either family's paper records previously connected them to Albert's Nova Scotia Roses or to Kilravock at all.
Biography
Early life
Albert (John) Ross was born in the Maitland district of East Hants, Hants County, Nova Scotia, the son of Thomas Stewart Rose (1841-1911) and Matilda I. Barbrick (1853-1925). Three separate documents give three different years for his birth: the 1891 Canada Census list his age as 8, putting his birth circa 1883; his 1922 naturalization declaration states 27 August 1878, Maitland, N.S.; his World War I draft card gives 27 August 1877 (no place stated); and his death certificate gives 12 August 1880. This spread of dates, all in the same general range, is treated here as an unresolved minor discrepancy rather than evidence against his identity or parentage, which are separately well supported (see Research notes).

Emigration
Albert emigrated from Nova Scotia to the United States in April 1896, arriving via the Canadian Pacific Railway at Vanceboro, Maine, and settling in Washington State. He formally declared his intention to naturalize on 26 July 1922 in Whatcom County, Washington.

Marriage and children
Albert married Angela Marie O'Neill (1887–1954), daughter of Michael James O'Neill and Anna Rodgers, on 26 February 1908 in Whatcom County, Washington. Their children were:

Death & burial
Albert died 14 May 1950 in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington, and was buried 16 May 1950 at Ferndale, Whatcom County. His obituary, published in the Bellingham Herald on 16 May 1950, lists his surviving siblings as Walter and Wilbert Rose, and Mrs. George O'Neil and Mrs. Robert Barr — the basis for his documented connection to Thomas Stewart Rose and Matilda Barbrick, discussed fully below.

Research notes
Disputed origins
Albert's own 1908 marriage record and 1950 death certificate both name his parents as John (Stewart) Ross and Martha Kearn. No independent record of this couple has been found in any Nova Scotia or Washington source consulted to date.

Documentary evidence instead identifies Albert's parents as Thomas Stewart Rose (1841–1911) and Matilda I. Barbrick (1853–1925) of Urbania, East Hants, Nova Scotia:

*The only census-age Albert recorded in Nova Scotia in 1891 is in Thomas Stewart Rose and Matilda Barbrick's household, Maitland, East Hants.
*Albert's 1922 naturalization declaration gives his birthplace as Maitland, N.S., matching this family's location.
*Albert's 1950 obituary names his surviving siblings as Walter, Wilbert, Mrs. George O'Neil, and Mrs. Robert Barr — matching four documented children of Thomas Stewart Rose and Matilda Barbrick: Walter Rose (1891-1962), Wilbert Rose (1889-1954), Annie Rose (1897-1970) (m. George O'Neil, 1926, Halifax), and Bessie Rose (1894-1968) (m. Robert Garnet Barr, 1913, Bible Hill).

The identifications of Annie and Bessie are independently confirmed by their own marriage records, not merely by census household placement:

*Annie's 1897 delayed birth registration names her father as Stewart Rose; her 1926 marriage record (indexed "Annie Rall") names her parents as Stewart Rall and Matilda Barbreek — an evident phonetic rendering of "Barbrick."
*Bessie's 1913 marriage record names her parents as Stewart and Matilda.

This closes the evidentiary chain: obituary → named sisters → sisters' own marriage records → Thomas Stewart Rose and Matilda Barbrick. The John (Stewart) Ross/Martha Kearn parentage on Albert's own records remains unexplained — no corroborating record of that couple has been found — but is outweighed by the convergent census, naturalization, and obituary evidence above. FamilySearch previously carried two separate, unlinked person entries for this man (GSVB-B15, with the fuller U.S. record set, and PXJY-PZB, sourced only to the 1891 census); these have since been merged, with an alert note left on the profile explaining the reasoning above.
