According to a county history published in 1883, Daniel Bain was born in 1762 in Virginia, of Scottish descent, and enlisted in the Revolutionary War at about fourteen years of age, serving four years until the war's close; the same account states that he was present at the Battle of Bunker Hill.<ref name="whitecohist">''History of White County, Illinois. History of Illinois'' (Inter-State Publishing Company, 1883), pp. 630–631.</ref> Descendants of his son [[Daniel H. Bain (1794-1868)|Daniel H. Bain]] applied for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution on the strength of this service; the application was recorded under the name "Daniel Bayne" (DAR Ancestor No. A007694), but the DAR was unable to corroborate the service beyond the 1883 county history account.<ref name="whitecohist" /> Daniel Bain's own age at death in 1838 — given as 78 — indicates a birth year of about 1760, slightly earlier than the 1762 given in the county history.<ref name="whitecohist" />

On 29 December 1789, Daniel Bain married [[Sarah Ross (-aft1829)|Sarah Ross]] in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; Sarah's father, William Ross, signed the marriage bond as bondsman.<ref name="Marriage Bonds (Vols. A-C), C.065.60002, image 267 of 1096" /> Daniel Bain was active in land transactions with the Ross family in the years immediately following: in January 1792, his father-in-law, [[William Ross Sr. of Rocky River|William Ross Sr.]], conveyed him 869 acres on Rocky River, Mecklenburg County;<ref name="Mecklenburg Co. bk. 14 p. 24" /> and on 19 April 1793, Daniel Bain, by then of the newly formed Cabarrus County, conveyed those same 869 acres — four tracts, including the original grant No. 3681 tract — to "William Ross, Junior," for £400, witnessed by David McKinley Sr. and William Ross [Sr.]<ref name="Cabarrus Co. bk. 1 p. 38" /> Separately, on 12 April 1798, John Ross and his wife Elizabeth, of Cabarrus County, conveyed Daniel Bain 40 acres on the south side of Rocky River — including an improvement already in Bain's possession — under a land-office patent to John Ross of the same date; this appears to be a land-office grant and immediate resale on the same day.
