|tna_description=Petitioners: William, Earl of Ross. Name(s): Earl of Ross, William. Addressees: King. Nature of request: [Petition in 4 parts].1) The earl states that he delivered the king's letters to Chyen who has said that he has the keeping of the shrievalties of Invernairn, Forres and Elgin and the issues of the forest which were assigned to him for his sustenance, which the earl does not think was the king's will, and he believes the issues could be spent more wisely on the repair of castles and fortresses.2) The earl requests that whereas a woman of inheritance has died and her son who is not yet 16 has been taken into the king's hand, that he be granted the wardship and marriage for a lady who has served the countess his wife.3) The earl is at the king's service but has been given no command and requests that he can be employed where the king thinks best.4) The earl requests letters of safe-conduct to two merchants, Boner and Slethy, to come and go into England to buy and sell. Nature of endorsement: [None]. Places mentioned: Moray, [Scotland]; Invernairn, [Nairnshire, Scotland]; Forres, [Elginshire, Scotland]; Elgin, [Elginshire, Scotland]; Kilrawok (Kilravock), [Nairnshire, Scotland]; Geddes, [Nairnshire, Scotland]. People mentioned: Reginald le Chyen (Cheyne); Roger Boner, merchant; Andrew Slethy of Elgin, merchant.
|tna_note=The petition has been speculatively dated to c. 1290-c. 1307 as it appears to be a petition of Edward I by the hand, and these dates correspond to the dates of Edward's I involvement in Scotland.
