A William Ross is found being deeded land lying between English Buffalo and Coddle Creek in [[Mecklenburg County, North Carolina]], as early as June 25, 1764. In 1768, William Ross and his wife Elizabeth deed 56 acres between English Buffalo and Coddle Creek to James Ashmore. In early 1769 we find an additional deed from William and Elizabeth to Hezekiah James Balch for 88 acres on English Buffalo and Coddle Creeks.

No mention is found of him in deed records until a decade later when, on March 20, 1779, William Ross entered a grant for 250 acres on the fourth side of English Buffalow Creek. Several years later, in a deed dated May 19, 1783, William Ross and his wife Jean sold to Seth Rodgers 250 acres on English Buffalo Creek.

Are we looking at two separate William Rosses here? An early William married to Elizabeth and second William, potentially a son, married to Jean?
William appears first in deeds with wife Elizabeth and later with wife Jean. It's possible that these are two different Williams with two different wives. Land transactions indicate that William had at least four sons - Adam, Theodore, Samuel, and Robert Ross. It's unclear which wife would have been the mother of these children.
William was dead before September 14, 1810, when Theodore Ross conveyed to Adam Ross 32½ acres on the west side of Coddle Creek, Cabarrus County, part of a 65-acre tract left to Adam Ross and Theodore Ross by the will of their father.
