• 15 June 1681 - Andrew Fraser in Fearne appointed as bailie by George Stronach of Balblair, to deliver a precept of sasine to a notary public for registration. The precept of sasine granted to David Ross and Margaret Stronach, and the longest living of them, in conjunct fie and liferent, the Easter Oxgait of Balblair, consisting of the toun of Balblair, extending to one quarter or two oxgaits of land, with the alehouse, alehouse croft, houses buildings, yards, kilns, bars, byres etc. After their deaths, the right would pass to the heirs male begotten between David Ross and Margaret Stronach, failing which to David Ross’s nearest male heirs, failing which to his heirs and assignees, without reversion, regress or redemption.   At Fortrose, sasine registered for David Ross and Margaret Stronach, his spouse, produced by Thomas Gair, notary public, recording that on 15 June 1681, in the presence of a notary pubic and witnesses, David Ross of Balblair was granted right and disposition, for himself and as attorney for Margaret Stronach, in conjunct fie and liferent, the Easter Oxgait of Balblair

“married Margaret Stronach, "his spouse" (Sasine 8th July, 1681)”

What this entry is saying is that Margaret Stronach is referred to as the spouse of David Ross of Balblair in a sasine dated 8th July, 1681. A sasine, is simply a document, or sometimes an actual event, that ratifies the agreements made in a previous document. We find in many trees on the internet, however, this date, 8 July 1681, as the marriage date of David & Margaret and/or the birth date of their son Hugh Ross.

This is actually sasine on a precept dated one month earlier in which Margaret's father, George Stronach of Balblair, grants to David and Margaret liferent of Easter Oxgait of Balblair.

This date of the 8th of July, 1681, therefore, is not their marriage date and is in no way related to the birth of their son Hugh.

David & Margaret's marriage contract is dated 8 August 1667. The contract requires that the marriage take place before 31 December 1667. Therefore, they had been married for over 13 years at the time of this sasine.

Hugh was their 3rd son, born after his older brother George. We know, then, only that Hugh was born sometime in 1680 or later. There is no evidence of his exact birth date. Birth records were not kept in Fearn Parish until 1749.
