This is the most detailed resource covering the descendants of Fearchar Mac an t-Sagairt, Earl of Ross, after the earldom was lost to the Leslie family circa 1372. It appears, therefore, to be the basis for most, if not all, of what appears in family trees on the internet.

Francis Nevile Reid wrote the genealogical tables that comprise the first half of Rossiana. They were first published in sections in Northern Notes & Queries beginning in 1889. They are also now published as their own book entitled The Earls of Ross and their descendants.

In his introduction, Reid wrote:

“In these tables there are probably many omissions, and possibly many errors; it is, however, hoped that their publication will bring to light fresh material, and enable what is faulty to be corrected. A life passed chiefly abroad has rendered it impossible for me to consult authorities which are easily accessible to others. I am anxious to thank all those friends who have given me during many years of research so much valuable assistance.”

Harmon Pumpelly Read included Francis's genealogical tables as the basis of Rossiana and added his father's research, along with his own, as the second part of the book, which he published in 1908. About Reid's tables, he says,

“In later publications Mr. Reid noted many corrections, and these changes, as well as many corrections by the author, have been made in the account as printed here.”

Additional corrections are covered in articles on this website, most notably, corrections to the Ross of Balblair and Monro of Allan families.

Francis and Harmon were both descendants of Fearchar, Earl of Ross, but were related very distantly. Other than correspondence between Francis and Harmon's father, General Read, concerning genealogical research, their families don't appear to have been personally acquainted.
