• Headrights were often bought & sold, so there is no way to know whether the person who claimed the headright on the patent was the same person who paid the transport costs. There is also no way to know from the patent where a person landed or where they lived after arriving.
• In the original laying-out of the headright system in 1618, it was required that a headright stay in Virginia for 3 years, or die in Virginia within those 3 years, before a land patent could be procured.
• By the time this part of Virginia had begun to be settled in the 1670s, the headright system seemed to be falling apart, so it's hard to know if this '3-year rule' was still being enforced.
• Either way, a patent wasn't necessarily obtained at the time of the importation, or at the end of the 3 years. It could've been claimed years later. So, there is no way to know when a person arrived based on when their headright was listed in a land grant.
• It was possible to receive a headright for transporting a child, so there is no way to know how old a person was when they immigrated.
