Discussion

The old text of this document is difficult to read. The copy was requested from ScotlandsPeople's because it is mentioned twice in the 'Branch of Balblair' section of Rossiana, once for George Ross and once for Andrew Ross, sons of David Ross of Balblair.

It appears to be sasine on the deed of disposition dated 8 March 1707, in which David Ross of Balblair disponed the estate. According to a letter written by R. R. Stodart of the office of the Lord Lyon in 1873,

David Ross on the 8th March, 1707, had disponed Balblair, reserving a liferent to himself and his wife, to his grandson Andrew (son of his own eldest son Andrew), and the heirs male of his body whom failing to the other heirs male of Andrew, whom failing to the Rev. George Ross and the heirs male of his body, whom failing to Hugh Ross third lawful son of the said David and the heirs male of his body.

It's possible to make out this same language, "Andrew Ross his grandchild, and the heirs male of his body whom failing to the other heirs male of Andrew Ross, whom failing to Mr. George Ross and the heirs male of his body, whom failing to Hugh Ross third lawful son of the said David and the heirs male of his body", near the bottom of the first page of the sasine. There is what appears to be a description of the "lands of Balblair" beginning near the top of the second page. There is also mention of the lands of Little Allan, which was a neighbor to Balblair. It's possible to make out the phrase, "all lying within the abounds of ffearn parish in ~~ ~~ Shire ~~ of Ross". Immediately following is, "Reserving always ~~ to David Ross and Margaret Stronach his spous their lyferent rights."

Mentioned many times is Andrew Ross, grandchild to the David Ross of Balblair. This is interesting because we find, on July 5, 1711, a Decreet of Adjudication at the instance of the said John Watson, against Andrew Ross, son and heir of the said deceased David Ross of Balblair, adjudging the lands of Balblair, in the parish of Fearn, the lands of Meikle Allan, and the lands of Ballon, in the parish of Logie Easter. And in the many transactions pertaining to Balblair after David's death, we find Andrew Sr., son of David, not his grandchild Andrew Jr.
