Discussion
This is the sasine that Francis Nevile Reid mentions in his entry on Hugh Ross, son of David Ross of Balblair, in the 'Branch of Balblair' section of Rossiana.
- Hugh, "third son," who was probably father to David, "son to Hugh in Balblair" (Sasine 19th August, 1701).[2]
ScotlandsPeople's description was 'Sasine of 19 August 1701, Hugh Ross in Balblair mentioned as a witness in Sasine to Duff'.
The Scots secretary hand of this document is difficult to read. At the very end of the 3rd page it is possible to make out "David Ross son", and then an unknown word and then one word that looks like Hugh below the end of the sentence. "Hugh Ross in Balblair" then appears clearly at the very beginning of the next page. Just before David Ross at the end of page 3 is another mention of a David Ross followed by something that looks like Royal-something officer of something. Listed next is a John Ross followed by something that looks like 'in ffearn'.
So, was Hugh Ross in Balblair a witness to this sasine along with David, son of Hugh Ross in Balblair?
Hugh, the 3rd son of David of Balblair, was born after 1679. We know this because his older brother, George, was born in 1679.[3] Hugh may have been just old enough to act as a witness himself in 1701, but he was definitely not old enough to be the father of a witness in 1701.
Was there, then, a different Hugh Ross in Balblair in 1701 that would've been older than David of Balblair's 3rd son Hugh?
