| Arrangement | The Ailsa Muniments were arranged and partially inventoried before being placed on deposit in the Scottish Record Office. Although a limited amount of re-arrangement has proved essential in the interests of chronological sequence, the framework of the original arrangement has been retained almost intact. This acceptance of the existing arrangement has been rendered necessary by the existence of an already completed inventory of part of the collection to which constant back-references must be made, by the contingency of possible citation in outside publications, and by the obligation to satisfy documentary, legal and historical requirements.
The major part of the collection is divided into two series, viz., Series 1 (GD25/3-7), covering the period 1290-1699, and Series 2 (GD25/8), covering the period 1600-1861. Thus Series 1 and Series 2 overlap for the period 1600-1699. The retention of the double line arrangement for this period has necessitated intricate cross-references. Both series are divided into bundles of documents each covering about 20 years; Series 1 containing bundles numbered 1-18, and Series 2, bundles numbered 1-9. Other sections of title deeds and legal papers are also included in the collection (GD25/1 'Writings' and GD25/2 'Supplement'), as well as a large miscellaneous section, GD25/9. |
