Omnibus hanc cartam visuris et audituris Walterus de Lesley dominus de Ross salutem in Domino sempiternam Noueritis nos dedisse concessisse et hac presenti carta nostra confirmasse dilecto consanguineo nostro Andree Mercer pro suo fideli seruicio nobis impenso et impendendo totam terram nostram de Faythley cum pertinenciis in baronia de Kynedward infra vicecomitatum de Abirdene Quamquidem terram cum pertinenciis Johanneta de Meingnes filia et heres quondam Alexandri de[1] Meingnes domina dicte terre . . . in sua pura et legitima viduitate apud Dwne in Mentheth quinto die mensis Junij anno Domini millesimo cccmo octuagesimo primo nobis . . . simpliciter resignauit Tenendam et habendam eidem Andree heredibus suis et assignatis de nobis et heredibus nostris in feodo et hereditate imperpetuum . . . Translation

Charter of Andrew Mercer.—(A.D. 1381.)

You will all see and hear this charter that Walter de Lesley, lord of Ross, has granted us eternal salvation in the Lord of Noueritis, and confirmed our present charter to our beloved kinsman Andrew Mercer for his faithful service to us and spending all our land of Faythley with the appurtenances in the barony of Kynedward below the viscounty of Abirdene Whereas the land with its appurtenances Johanneta de Meingnes daughter and heiress of the late Alexander de Meingnes lady of the said land . . in her pure and legitimate widowhood at Dwne in Mentheth on the fifth day of the month of June in the year of our Lord one thousand three hundred eighty-first . . He simply resigned the holding and holding of the same Andrew to his heirs and assigns of us and our heirs in perpetual fee and inheritance. . . Paying thence to us and our heirs. . . one pair of gilded shoes at Faythley aforesaid at the feast of Pentecost in the name of the white firm yearly only if requested. . . In witness whereof we hereby affix our seal to these venerable witnesses in Christ, the Lords Alexander and Alexander, by the grace of God, the bishops of the churches of Moravia and Ross, Lords Alexander and Willelmo de Lindisay, our dearest brothers, the Lords Walter Senescall Robert de Innes and Richard Comyn, the soldiers of the Magistrates Willelmo de Dyngvale and Alexander Man dean and archdeacon of the church of Ross Adam de Vrchart Alexander de Cheeshelm Hugh de Monro Robert Burnen' and many others at Elgyne on the eighteenth day of August in the aforesaid year.
