To all who shall see or hear this letter, John de He Count Rossie and Lord of the Isles, I salute you in the Lord. You will know that we have given consent and early deliberation of our counsel, and have by this present charter confirmed to our dearest brother Camal Celestine de Insulis all and each of our lands of Femacostrech underwritten, viz. winter To hold and to have all the aforesaid lands with their appurtenances belonging to the aforesaid Celestine our brother and his heirs between Celestine himself and Finvola daughter of Lachlan McGilleoin de Doward of his body legitimately begotten or procreated by whom the veto failing which is absent from the true legitimate heirs of the said Celestine between Celestine himself and any other having produced or procreating a legitimate wife, and failing all that is absent, we desire that each and every one of the aforesaid lands with their appurtenances shall return to us and our heirs freely, without any question, clamor, or interruption, from us and our heirs in fee and inheritance in perpetuity through all their right goals ancient and divided in plain woods, meadows, moors, marshes, pastures, and pastures, peters, turbarians, charcoal makers, and breweries, roads, paths, ponds, streams, rivers, and lakes, woods, oaks, and bushes, hunting, hunting, fishing, with le wrak waith, and ware, with mills, multitudes, and their sequels, with courts and their with the exits of herezelds of bludwite forks and of merchyetys women with common pasture and entrance and exit and with all other and individual benefits liberties fertility and easements and their just appurtenances to any tarn not named than named tarn under the land than above the tarn far as near to the aforesaid lands with the appurtenances those who look, or are justly able to look, into the future freely, quietly, completely, fully, honorably, and in peace, without any revocation or remonstrance. By rendering annually from thence the aforesaid Celestine and his heirs, between Celestine himself and the aforesaid Finvola, of his body legitimately begotten or to beget, to all that is absent in default of the heirs of the said Celestine, between himself and any other legitimate wife begotten or to beget, of us and our heirs and successors, sixpence of the usual money of Scotland in the name of a white firm over the sole of the said lands of Fernacostrech at the feast of Pentecost if it is requested only for any other burden of secular service by exaction or demand by us our heirs and successors may demand or be required of the said lands with their appurtenances. And we, the aforesaid Johannes count Rossie and the lord of the Isles, our heirs and successors, the whole and entire aforesaid lands with their appurtenances to the aforesaid Celestine and his heirs, between him and the aforesaid Finvola, lawfully begotten, or procreating, failing which, that which is absent from the true and legitimate heirs of the said Celestine, between him and any other I will legitimately marry a wife from my body, procreating and procreating in all and through all things, as it is predicated and foretold against all mortal men and women, we will warrant, we will appease, and we will defend the eternal. In witness whereof we have affixed our seal to this present charter. comment: For other grants to Celestine see nos. 76 and 80, and comments. By 1467 some at least of these lands were in the hands of the earl of Sutherland, who is said to have married a daughter of Alexander, earl of Ross (Sutherland Earldom, 75, 429-30); but it seems possible that they came to him as a marriage portion with a daughter of Celestine (Fraser, Sutherland, i, 66-67; and see app. D, table 6/23). The lands of Ferincoskry in Braechat (see no. 19 comment) later came to the Munros of Foulis through Celestine’s granddaughters. Margaret, wife ofAlexander ofGlengarry, granted her halfofthem to her cousin Hector Munro of Foulis in 1524 (Munro Writs, no. 46), and the Dingwall half was sold to Duncan Bayne of Tulloch in 1555 and exchanged by his son with Robert Munro of Foulis in 1563 (ibid., 78). On place-names, Davachcarry is probably Acharry, and Pladd is Fload, frequently named along with Acharry and Pulrossie (OPS, ii, 687-8). The absence of witnesses in this charter is unusual.
