• 1086 - Count Alan holds 1½ hides in Wodtone, Broadwater Hundred, Hertford. Godwine holds of him. There is land for 4 ploughs. In demesne there can be 2 ploughs. There 3 bordars and cottars have 2 ploughs. There is meadow for 2 oxen, and pasture for the livestock. It is a was worth 20s ; TRE 30s. Godwine held this land of the Church of St. Peter ; he could not sell, but after his death it ought to have reverted to the church, as the hundred testifies. But his wife turned with this land by force to Eadgifu the Fair, and held it on the day when King Edward was alive and dead. From this land 16 acres were taken after the coming of King William, which now Anschtal de Ros holds under the archbishop, and yet Count Alan discharges the kings geld on them.
