]> 2026-08-14T17:53:49+00:00 Source:Scottish document A-S Relations, no. 7 3100 en 4/1/2 4019 An agreement is made at York in the presence of Otto, cardinal deacon of San Nicola and papal legate, between Henry (III), king of England, and Alexander (II), king of Scots, over the complaints which the king of Scots raised, namely the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland, which the king of Scotland sought as his inheritance; also, over 15,000 marks which King John, the father of King Henry, had received from William, late king of Scotland, father of King Alexander, in return for certain agreements between the kings which Alexander asserted that King John has not kept; also, over agreements made between King Henry and King Alexander about a marriage to be contracted between Alexander’s sister, Margaret, which, according to the king of Scots, had not been kept. Alexander has remitted and quitclaimed to Henry, king of England, the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland, and all of the money and agreements mentioned above. In return for this quitclaim, King Henry gave and granted to King Alexander, 200 pounds’ worth of land in the counties of Northumberland and Cumberland, to be held in demesne by the king of Scots, for an annual render of a sore falcon at Carlisle by the hands of the constable of Carlisle castle, on the feast of the Assumption of St Mary (15 Aug.), free and quit of scot and geld, and aids of sheriffs, etc. All pleas which arise in these lands shall be pleaded in the court of the king of Scots. The king of Scots has done homage and sworn fealty to the king of England for these lands. The king of England has caused William, earl of Warenne, to swear on the king’s soul that this agreement will be kept faithfully, and the king of Scots has caused Walter Comyn, earl of Menteith, to swear on his soul, and the king of Scots has caused Earl Mael Coluim (II of Fife), the earl of Menteith, Walter son of Alan (II the steward), Walter Olifard, Bernard Fraser, Henry de Balliol, Gilbert Marshall, earl of Pembroke, Humphrey, earl of Hereford, David Comyn, David Marshall, Thomas son of Ranulph, William de Forz, John de Balliol and Henry of Hastings to swear to the keeping of this peace, and they have all submitted themselves to the authority of the pope.
