Discussion
In the 'Rose/Ross DNA Story' section of this book, Charles Brashear states that 'the Rose of Kilravock Clan originated with the Ross Clan'.
This is one of those instances where we need to be clear about exactly what we mean when we say 'Clan Ross'. Is he insinuating a relationship between the Rose of Kilravock family and Fearchar Mac an t-Sagairt Earl of Ross?
Luckily, he goes on to say that part of his reasoning for this conclusion is the work of researcher Hamish Ross who wrote, in part, 'the arms granted [to Hugh of Kilravock] are very similar to grants to other Rosses (all variations of three water budgets (carriers) on a field of gold)' .
In mentioning the coats of arms that all display 3 water bougets, he's clearly associating the Rose family of Kilravock with the other Norman de Ros families when he uses the term 'Clan Ross'. The coat of arms of the Earls of Ross has 3 lions, not water bougets.
It is important that we clarify this because Clan Ross most often refers to the descendants of Fearchar. A connection hasn't been confirmed yet, genetically or otherwise, between the Rose family of Kilravock & the family of the original Earls of Ross, at least not one that would end with them sharing the same Y-chromosome.
