Noveritis nos de consensu et assensu et matura deliberatione totius concilii nostri dedisse concessisse et hac presenti carta nostra confirmasse carissimo fratri nostro camali Celestino de Insulis omnes et singulas terras nostras viginti octo marcarum dominii nostri de Slete cum pertinenciis in dicto nostro dominio. Translation

To all who shall see or hear this letter, we, John, count of Rossie, and lord of the Isles, greet you eternally in the Lord. You will know that we have granted by agreement and consent and early deliberation of our whole council, and confirmed by this present charter to our dearest brother Celestine de Insulis, all and every one of our lands of twenty-eight marks of our domain of Slete with the appurtenances in our said domain. To hold and to have all the aforesaid lands with their appurtenances to the aforesaid Celestine our brother and his heirs male between Celestine himself and Finvola daughter of Lachlan McGilleoin de Doward of his body legitimately begotten or procreated which indeed failing that which is absent from the true legitimate male heirs of the said Celestine between Celestine himself and If you have any other legitimate wife, or if you are having any other legitimate wife, and whosoever fails to do so, let all the aforesaid lands with their appurtenances to us and our heirs, as it is promised, freely, without any question, cry, or interruption, be returned to us and our heirs as a perpetual fee and inheritance by all rightful means. their ancient and divided forests in the plains of meadows and moors, pastures and pastures, petards, terrariums, charcoal makers, and breweries, roads, paths, ponds, streams, rivers, and lakes, woods, oaks, and heathers, and bushes, hunting, fishing, with le wrak waith, and ware with mills, multitudes, and their sequels with courts and their exits herezeld bludwit forks and women's merkets with common pasture and children entering and exiting and with all other and individual benefits liberties fertility and assies and just their belongings to any tarn not named than named tarn under the ground than above the tarn far as near to the aforesaid lands, with their appurtenances, or justly able to look upon them, in the future, freely, quietly, fully, in full, with honor, and in peace, without any revocation or remonstrance. And we, the aforesaid Johannes count Rossie and lord of the Isles, our heirs and successors, the whole and entire aforesaid lands with their appurtenances to the aforesaid Celestine and his heirs male between Celestine himself and Finvola the aforesaid, lawfully begotten or procreating, failing which that which is absent from the true and legitimate heirs of the said Celestine, between Celestine himself and whatever other legitimate wife begets or begets from his body, in all and through all things, as it is predicated and aforesaid, we will warrant against all mortal men and women, we will appease and defend the immortals. NOTE: a. John Riddell’s note (NLS, Adv. MS. 26.3.2, p.175) adds ‘apparante’ here.

COMMENT: It appears that Celestine’s tenure of the lands of Sleat was only temporary. His brother Hugh, already having the designation ‘of Sleat’ by 1461 (no.74), received them by charter in 1469 (no.96). For sequence of heirs see also nos.76 and 82 - in this case alone it was limited to heirs male, but this was not put to the test. Ship service was becoming less usual, but had been quite common in the west and the islands (see Introduction, p.xl). Of the witnesses, the two members of the de Insulis family have not been identified with certainty: there was a John son of Alexander both in the Ardnamurchan family (app. D, table Ia/3) and in the Glengarry line (app. D, table 2/20); Angus is perhaps Angus of Fersit in the Lochaber, later Keppoch, family (app. D, table 3/26). The last witness was Ewen MacLean of Ardgour, as in no.78.
