Archival history This collection relates to the families of Sutherland and of Forse, Sinclair of Forss and Sinclair Sutherland of Brabster. It was formed by amalgamating five groups of documents deposited in the Scottish Record Office between 1935 and 1964.

1. Sutherland of Forse legal papers, 1601-1798, with copies of earlier charters and genealogical notes, deposited in 1935 by Miss Mary Sutherland of Forse, daughter of John William Sutherland of Forse, Chief of the Clan Sutherland (d.1909). This deposit apparently included material collected by Mr John Sutherland, retired schoolteacher, Lybster. (File T/77) 2. Deeds and papers relating to the Sutherland family, 1574-1766, deposited by Miss Sutherland in the Public Record Office, London, in 1935, and transferred to the Scottish Record Office in 1963. (File T/77) 3. Sinclair and Sinclair Sutherland of Brabster title deeds, papers and correspondence, 1506-1847, deposited in 1952 by Miss F.E.S. Sutherland, 16 Forbes Road, Edinburgh, and formerly referenced as GD1/55. (File T/261) 4. Miscellaneous papers, mainly 19th cent. correspondence, also deposited in 1952 by Miss F.E.S. Sutherland. (File T/77) 5. Title deeds and legal papers, 1560-1901, deposited by Messrs John C. Brodie, W.S., and transferred to the collection in 1964. (File T/398)

The groups overlapped to a considerable extent and the documents have been catalogued according to their subject matter without regard to provenance. The old reference has been noted against those transferred from GD1/55.

A sixth group of records was added to the collection in 1988. It consists of Sutherland of Forse papers, mainly correspondence, deposited in 1985 by Mr K G Sutherland, Edinburgh. These papers were formerly listed in NRA(S) Survey No.2666. They have not been amalgamated with the rest of the collection.
