| Description | This series of charters was 'created' in a period when preserving provenance was not accorded the importance that it is now. The charters were organised into groups according to the reigning monarch and described in great detail in calendars of the charters, many being practically transcribed. These original descriptions are currently being updated and added progressively to the electronic catalogue, but the original descriptive calendars are available for inspection in paper form (15 volumes) in the Historical Search Room at National Records of Scotland. |

| Archival history | This collection of charters originally comprised in the main an artificial collection belonging to Cosmo Innes (1798-1874), professor of Constitutional Law and History, Edinburgh and a friend of Thomas Thomson, deputy clerk register, and then given to Register House (now National Records of Scotland). Some charters were later added in, from productions in Court of Session processes and elsewhere. In the main the original provenance of any RH6 charter can be found by looking at the endorsement, made when the charters were being catalogued. This does not always work, however, as evidently some charters were of unknown provenance. |
