Discussion
- “In or shortly before 1382 he married Euphemia Countess of Ross, daughter of William Earl of Ross, and widow of Sir Walter Lesley. Tliat lady and her predecessors had come to possess one half the lands of the earldom of Buchan, in consequence of the marriage of the brother of a former Earl with the younger daughter of Earl John Comyn ; and on her marriage she resigned these lands (designed the barony of Kynedward) to the King, who, on 22d July 1382, regranted them to her and her husband Sir Alexander Stewart, who from that date forward is called Earl of Buchan. Three days later he had (as Earl of Buchan) charters confirming grants to him by his wife of the earldom of Eoss, and of extensive lordships and baronies, including the islands of Skye and Lewis, lands in Caithness, Sutherland, Athole, Fife, Galloway, the tlianage of Glendowacliy, etc.; and other charters to him by Robert II. are to be found in the public records.”[2]
