Template:FamilySearch microfilm full

Template page
Template documentation

This template will create a source citation for microfilm reels that have been digitized by FamilySearch and published on their site.

Some collections at FamilySearch are indexed, meaning that records can be located by searching for particular name, date, and/or place. These typically include census, birth and marriage records. In such cases, 'Record' pages that can be attached to the FamilySearch Family Tree are returned as a search result. These 'Record' pages provide a link to view the original image. Clicking the 'Image Group Number' on the Group Data tab beneath the image will take you to the microfilm reel that contains the image.

In cases where documents are not indexed, typically probate records and deed books, documents are found by browsing the record collections in order to find the appropriate microfilm reel and then browsing the images contained on the reel.

Usage

This citation is created from a combination of information found in the source citation on the image page and the catalog page of the book the record is found in.

  1. Below the image of the original document is an 'Information' tab. It typically contains a citation for the image being displayed. The county name and the volume name are taken from this citation. The volume name follows the county in the citation. If no citation has been generated, the volume name can be found under 'Film/Digital Note'.
  2. The film number can be found above the image. It might be necessary to click the arrow next to the collection name in order to reveal the Film #.
  3. Click on the 'Catalog Record' found above the citation in the 'Information' tab. This will open the 'Catalog' page for the book containing the image.
  4. Click the 'View this catalog record in WorldCat for other possible copy locations' link in the Catalog page. This will open the WorldCat page.
  5. The OCLC number is found under 'Show more information'. Enter this number into citer.toolforge.org to create a source citation.
  6. Copy the parameters from the citer.toolforge.org citation into the template.
  7. Add the {{FamilySearch microfilm full}} template to the 'Sources' section of an article.
  8. Create the citation within the text using {{sfn}}. Include specifics of the document in the |loc= parameter. For instance, names of the grantor & grantee plus the date of the deed, or name of testator and date of will.

Typically, this citation would be added to the bulleted list in the 'Sources' section of an article. {{sfn}} would then be used to add the citation within the article. The page number and link (url) would be added there. It is possible to add the page number and url to the {{FamilySearch deed book}} template itself and include it in the body of the article, but the standard convention would be to use the {{sfn}} template.
