Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:File link' not found.Template:Pp-move-indef

{{Infobox Ross ancestor}} may be used to summarize information about a Ross ancestor, usually at the top of an article. Ross ancestors are individuals that can be found in Ross lines of the family tree. This can include anyone whose ancestor or descendant is a Ross.

It is not necessary to create a page for every ancestor in the line back to a Ross ancestor. Pages should only be created for ancestors who have been well researched and/or are a patriarch or matriarch in a family line that has been confirmed using DNA testing.

This template adds article to Category:Ross ancestors.

The infobox may be added by pasting the template as shown below into an article and then filling in the desired fields. Any parameters left blank or omitted will not be displayed. Most of the parameters will display in the infobox or be used to format the infobox. Some parameters are used only to associate a property with the person and will not be displayed in the infobox. In situations where multiples will be entered, more than one occupation, or more than one spouse, for instance, separate them with a semicolon.

Any details entered in the infobox should be discussed in the body of the article and supported with sources.

Form:Ross ancestor can also be used to create or edit any page that utilizes Template:Infobox Ross ancestor.

Parameters

It is not necessary to use all these parameters for any one person. The list is long to cover a wide range of people. Only enter details that can be supported by genealogical research, and ensure that this information is sourced in the article or (if present only in the infobox) in the infobox itself.

Any parameters left blank or omitted will not be displayed. Many parameters have alternative names, implemented for compatibility with other templates (especially to aid merging). The preferred names are shown in the table below.

This template is based on Wikipedia's Template:Infobox person. For the parameters that exist in both templates, names have been set to match the format of the parameter used in Wikipedia's template.

Parameter Explanation Usage Property
name Common name of person. Typically this would be first and last name unless middle name is documented and known, then it would be included.
  • For women, this would be first name and maiden name, plus middle name, if known. The page name, however, should include their first name, middle name, maiden name and any subsequent married names, along with birth & death dates.
    • The |other name= field could include separate entries for each married name. For instance, if Mary Ross married John Smith and George Anderson, the |name= parameter would be 'Mary Ross'. |other name= would include both Mary Smith and Mary Anderson.
    • If Mary also went by Polly in some instances, |other name= could also include Polly Ross.
  • If middle initials are specified (or implied) by the lead of the article, and are not specified separately in the |birth name= parameter, include them here. Do not put honorifics or alternative names in this parameter. There are separate parameters for these things, covered below.

honorific_prefix To appear on the line above the person's name. This is for things like |honorific_prefix=Sir – honorifics of serious significance that are attached to the name in formal address, such as knighthoods and titles of nobility; do not use it for routine things like "Template:!mxt" or "Template:!mxt" displays in infobox,

This is for things like |honorific_suffix=[[Earl of Ross]] – honorifics of serious significance that are attached to the name in formal address, such as national orders and non-honorary doctorates; do not use it for routine things like "Template:!mxt". Only the title that the person is most known by should be entered here. Titles for additional positions held can be entered under |title=. displays in infobox,

portrait Image name: abc.jpg, xpz.png, 123.gif, etc., without the File: or Image: prefix.

If an image is desired but not available, one may add yes to the |needs-photo= parameter of the {{WikiProject Biography}} template on the talk page. If no image is available yet, do not use an image placeholder.

Property:Has portrait
image_upright Scales the image thumbnail from its default size by the given factor. Values less than 1 scale the image down (0.9 = 90%) and values greater than 1 scale the image up (1.15 = 115%). used for formatting in infobox
landscape Set to yes when using wide, short images. The image height (rather than width) will be limited to 200 pixels. used for formatting in infobox
alt Descriptive alt text for the image, for visually impaired readers. One word (such as photograph) is rarely sufficient. Do not copy-paste the value of |caption= (below) into this parameter. Example of the difference: "Willie Nelson at a concert in Dallas, 1989" is good as |caption= value; "Nelson in western-wear with an acoustic guitar, on stage in a daytime show with band in background" is an |alt= description. If nothing meaningful can be said that isn't already in the caption, use the stock text |alt=refer to caption. displayed in infobox
caption Caption for image, if needed. Try to include the date of photo, some context (check the File: or Commons page for the image). Image credit should generally not be included per MOS:CREDITS. displayed in infobox
other_image Image name: abc.jpg, xpz.png, 123.gif, etc., without the File: or Image: prefix.

The image used at the top of the infobox would be |portrait=. In many cases, portraits of ancestors are not available. If some other image is available that might distinguish an ancestor, enter it here. For instance,

If the person is known to have been born before a specific date or year, because a baptism/christening date is known, birth of a younger sibling is known, etc., use |birth date range end= alone, without |birth date=.
|birth date= and |birth date range end= can be used together to indicate a range of time in which a person was born (i.e., an earliest and latest possible date).

birth_place Place of birth: city, administrative region, country.
  • Use the name of the birthplace at the time of birth, e.g.: Saigon (prior to 1976) or Ho Chi Minh City (post-1976).
  • Do not use a flag template, coat of arms, or other icon.
  • Omit unnecessary or redundant details. For example, it is not necessary to state: New York City, New York, United States when New York City, U.S. conveys essentially the same information more concisely.
  • Countries should generally not be linked.
  • For modern subjects, the country should generally be a sovereign state; for United Kingdom locations, the constituent countries of the UK are sometimes used instead, when more appropriate in the context.
  • For historical subjects, use the place name most appropriate for the context and our readership. What the place may correspond to on a modern map is a matter for an article's main text.
  • For subsequent places (of death, etc.) it is not necessary to repeat jurisdictional details or links for the same place name.

|death date= and |death date range end= can be used together to indicate a range of time in which a person died (i.e., an earliest and latest possible date).

ethnicity Ethnicity as predicted by a combination of ancestry, residence and DNA testing. For instance, a Scotsman who lived in Scotland and whose ancestors lived in Scotland for many generations would be considered Scottish. A Scotsman who immigrated to colonial America would be considered Scottish. A Scotsman whose ancestors immigrated to Ireland would be considered Scottish.

There is a large group of matches in the Ross Surname Project whose Y-DNA shows descent from a man who came from Norway around the time of the Viking invasions. The earliest known descendants of this man lived in the 1700s. These descendants who lived 700 years after the Norwegian would've inherited only a small amount of DNA from him, but the fact that at least one line of ancestors, the patrilineal line, came from Norway and not through France and/or England and/or Ireland is of interest. These descendants might, therefore, be identified as Norwegian Scottish? This is an idea that needs to be flushed out as the wiki evolves.

education
alma_mater
graduation_date
education= applies specifically to the degree attained.

This should be the school from which the degree specified in |education= was obtained, and will often consist of the name of the last-attended institution of higher education (not secondary schools). It is usually not relevant to include either parameter for non-graduates, but article talk page consensus may conclude otherwise. The date of graduation should be entered in |graduation date=. If the exact date is not known, the year is acceptable. Only the most recent or most significant degree and graduation event should be entered in the infobox. The |education=, |alma_mater= and |graduation date= should all refer to the same degree/graduation event. Additional degrees can be entered in the body of the article. Not all of these parameters are required. It is acceptable to enter only one or two. Again, though, any details entered should pertain to the same event. height
height_m
height_cm
height_ft
height_in
If the height is known. This information is sometimes available in draft registration cards. This information is not appropriate for a living person. It is only interesting in a historical context where little is known about the appearance of ancestors. Any information entered should be sourced in the body of the article.

The subject's height, measured in centimetres (or metres) when using the metric system or in feet and inches when using the imperial system. Use XXX cm, X.XX m, or X ft Y in. The infobox will automatically display the appropriate conversion within parentheses.

  • To satisfy international variations of English, if the subject is American or British (or primarily notable in English for playing on an American or British team, or for participating in American or British sports) enter the height in feet (ft) and inches (in), otherwise enter the height in centimetres (cm).
    | height = 6 ft 3 in → 6 ft 3 in (191 cm)
    | height = 191 cm → 191 cm (6 ft 3 in)
  • The height parameter also accepts conversions done via the {{Convert}} template.
    | height = {{convert|6|ft|3|in|cm|abbr=on}} → 6 ft 3 in (191 cm)
    | height = {{convert|191|cm|ftin|abbr=on}} → 191 cm (6 ft 3 in)
  • If the subject's height stated in a source is the converted measurement, ensure that this measurement is accurately stated. For example, if a source states 192 centimetres but the infobox should display feet and inches first:
    • Incorrect usage, does not display (192 cm):
    | height = 6 ft 4 in → 6 ft 4 in (193 cm)
    • Correct usage, displays (192 cm):
    | height = 6 ft 3.6 in → 6 ft 3.6 in (192 cm)
    | height = 6 ft 4 in (192 cm) → 6 ft 4 in (192 cm)

weight
weight_kg
weight_lb
weight_st
If the weight is known. This information is sometimes available in draft registration cards. This information is not appropriate for a living person. It is only interesting in a historical context where little is known about the appearance of ancestors. Any information entered should be sourced in the body of the article.
The subject's weight, measured in kilograms when using the metric system, in pounds when using the imperial system, or in stone and pounds in the United Kingdom. Use X kg, X lb, or X st Y lb. The infobox will automatically display the appropriate conversion within parentheses.
  • If the subject is American (or primarily notable in English for playing for an American team, or for participating in U.S. sports), enter the weight in pounds (lb), otherwise enter the weight in kilograms (kg).
    | weight = 120 lb → 120 lb (54 kg)
    | weight = 60 kg → 60 kg (132 lb)
  • The weight parameter also accepts conversions done via the {{Convert}} template.
    | weight = {{convert|120|lb|kg|abbr=on}} → 120 lb (54 kg)
    | weight = {{convert|60|kg|lb|Template:Highlight|abbr=on}} → 60 kg (132 lb)
    • When using the convert template for kilogram-to-pound conversions, the zero (highlighted) is necessary for correct rounding. Otherwise, the example above would display as "60 kg (130 lb)".
  • If the subject's weight stated in a source is the converted measurement, ensure that this measurement is accurately stated. For example, if a source states 125 pounds but the infobox should display kilograms first:
    • Incorrect usage, does not display (125 lb):
    | weight = 57 kg → 57 kg (126 lb)
    • Correct usage, displays (125 lb):
    | weight = 56.7 kg → 56.7 kg (125 lb)
    | weight = 57 kg (125 lb) → 57 kg (125 lb)
